If you become a parent

When you are on parental leave, you can receive extra money in addition to the parental benefit from Försäkringskassan, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency. Collectively agreed parental pay, together with the parental benefit, means that you can receive almost 90% of your salary when you are on parental leave.

Parental pay provides extra money

Your employer can pay collectively agreed parental pay when you are on parental leave. The parental pay supplements the compensation from Försäkringskassan, which means that you can receive approximately 90 % of your salary.

Important to consider when you are going to be on parental leave

  • Tell your employer that you are going to become a parent, at least two months before the child’s due date.
  • When your child is born, you must contact Försäkringskassan to apply for parental benefit.
  • Notify your employer as soon as you receive a response from Försäkringskassan.

Occupational pension during parental leave

If you have occupational pension ITP 1, you will not lose pension funds when you are on parental leave. If you have occupational pension ITP 2, the rules are different. Check with your employer to find out what applies to you.
